Euphorbia grandialata
R.A.Dyer
African candelabrum
A tree-like, candelabra-shaped succulent plant, 4–12 m tall, with a sturdy trunk with rough, fissured,
greyish bark, and suberect, branched stems forming a broad, rounded crown. Branches are four-angled,
strongly winged, often constricted at irregular intervals into oblong segments.
Edges of the angles straight or sinuous, with more or less circular spiny zones,
approximately 6 × 5 mm, spaced 1–2 cm apart, bearing pairs of robust spines, approximately 2–5 mm long.

Inflorescences in clusters of 1–3 at each insertion point, appearing in dense clusters towards the tips of the stems,
on thick peduncles. Cyathia with a broadly cup-shaped involucre, elliptical nectar glands
touching one another, golden yellow in colour.
Capsules on a 4–5 mm long pedicel, subglobose, about 10 mm in diameter, yellowish, with 2–3 obtuse lobes.
Seeds subglobose, slightly compressed laterally, about 4 mm long and greyish in colour, smooth.
