A species native to the Mexican states of Puebla and
Veracruz. It is a plant that grows with many stems and forms large colonies,
reaching up to 1 metre in height and a diameter of up to 5 metres.

The stem is spherical and club-shaped, with deep green buds that are 8 to 16 centimetres in diameter. It has eight sharp ribs with widely spaced areoles.
It has between four and seven central spines that are strong and up to 6 cm long, and between 10 and 14 radial spines.
The funnel-shaped, yellow flowers are 3 to 4 centimetres long and of a similar diameter.
The fruits are 2 to 3 centimetres long, yellow, spherical and fleshy. It is a good cactus for outdoor rockeries in the Mediterranean coastal region.
It prefers well-drained soil when grown and full sun, with regular watering in summer.
